Chaplain’s Corner
1 April 2015
The Rev. Art Turnbull, Branch 15 Chaplain
April is that month that is put to music. “April showers” come our way bringing flowers in May. The tune is one of those that stick in the mind. It can be hummed anytime. The words can be sung along in the morning shower.
April showers in World War One brought the devastation of war in Europe to a greater depth. The rallying of the troops for the Empire in 1914 led to drenched and stinking reality in the trenches of warfare. The 2nd Battle of Ypres in April 1915 found the Canadian soldiers being drenched with chemicals in the gas attacks from the enemy lines. The promise of “May flowers” was a long time coming.
April is also the most frequent month in which Easter falls over the years. The Christian celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ, is one of the many meanings of this day as it is proclaimed with a resounding call for peace.
The Royal Canadian Legion from its origins after World War One, has been a voice for peace and justice. Canadians have not skimped on volunteering to face the foes of peace. The call to arms for World War Two is proof of the Canadian commitment to defend freedom. During the Cold War years Canada was more than capable in facing the threats of those days. Peacekeeping with the United Nations’ blessing has been a trademark of the professionalism of the Canadian Forces. More recent actions to uphold the values we treasure have taken place in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and now over Iraq and Syria.
April is a good month to contemplate the costs and the responsibilities of maintaining and protecting peace. As we make our parade and memorial of candle light vigilance on April 9th, think about the peace that is always sought.
The Jesus of Christianity came to his apostles, his disciples, his followers and said, “Peace be with you!” That gift of sacred peace is still proclaimed in many ways today. Peace be with you.
